Here are some words and terms from Poker Glossary:
ACE HIGH - A five-card hand containing an Ace but no pair.
ACES FULL - A Full House with Aces over any pair.
ACES UP - Two pairs one of which is an Ace.
ACTION - A player?s turn to act.
ACTIVE PLAYER - A player still in the pot.
ADD ON - The opportunity to buy additional chips.
ALL-IN - When you have put all of your playable money and chips into the pot during the course of a hand, you are said to be all-in.
ANTE - A prescribed amount posted before the start of a hand by all players.
BIG BLIND - The largest regular blind in a game.
BLIND - A required bet made before any cards are dealt.
BROKEN GAME - A game no longer in action.
BURNCARD - After the initial round of cards is dealt, the first card off the deck in each round that is placed under a chip in the pot, for security purposes. To do so is to burn the card; the card itself is called the burncard.
BUTTON - A player who is in the designated dealer position.
BUY-IN - The minimum amount of money required to enter any game.
CALL - To call is to match the current bet.
CHECK - To initiate the betting in a round, but to retain the right to act if another player initiates the betting.
DEAD CARD - A card that is not legally playable.
FLOP - A series of games with five community cards. These are called flop games. Holdem and Omaha are two popular flop games. The flop is the first three community cards dealt.
FOLD - To muck your cards because someone else has made a larger bet than you are willing to call.
FORCED BET - A blind bet or a bring-in.
HAND - Everything that occurs after the initial shuffling of the cards. A hand also has several other meanings, such as the five cards that you chose to play in games with more than five cards.
LIVE BLIND - A blind bet giving a player the option of raising if no one else has raised.
MIDDLE PAIR - If you pair one of your pocket cards to the second highest card on the flop, you have middle pair.
MUCK - The act of throwing your cards away because you cannot or did not win the pot. They are ineligible to win the pot if they are mucked.
PLAY BEHIND - Have chips in play that are not in front of you.
PLAY THE BOARD - Using all five community cards for your hand in Holdem.
PLAY OVER - To play in a seat when the occupant is absent.
POT - The money gathered in the middle of the table from blinds, bets, and raises. This money goes to the winner, or winners as the case may be.
RAISE - To increase the amount of the bet after the betting has already been opened in a round.
RAKE - The house cut of each pot.
STREET - Cards dealt on a particular round in stud games.
RE-BUY - To buy more chips. This is only legal in re-buy tournaments.
RIVER - The fifth and final community card dealt in flop games, or the last card dealt in non-flop games.
SHOWDOWN - The showdown occurs at the end of a hand, to determine the winner, if there is more than one player left.
SHUFFLE - The mixing and rearranging of the cards before each hand so that the cards occur randomly. This is done by the dealer.
TELL - Something a player will do that gives away their hand.
TILT - To play recklessly.
UPCARDS - Cards that are dealt face up for opponents to see in stud games.
WILD CARD - Games that use a wild card are called wild card games. A wild card is a card that can serve as any other card in making your hand.
